Choosing Your Niche in Copywriting

Great writers who are ready to jump into the world of copywriting are often faced with the question:

Should I pick a niche and focus on just one industry, or write about many different things and have clients in different industries?

In this blog, we will explore how we ended up working in our first niche, and we’ll break down the different niches you can get into considering your own experiences and interests.

To niche, or not to niche? That is the question.

Here’s a little backstory:

When our team at Copyriders first started out, we were very unsure about where to even start. All of our team members were either MBA graduates, Engineers, Designers, or expert Marketers.

We had work experience and personal interests, ranging from technology, economics, legal services, music, martial arts, art and design, architecture, etc.

To our surprise, we found our first client in the gaming industry who was super interested in working with us due to our diverse backgrounds. He asked if we had experience in gaming, and we were brutally honest with him:

We do not have experience in the gaming space yet, but we have written lots of copy before, and we are always eager to do research and learn.

Honesty is ALWAYS the key.

Because of our attitude and honesty, the client decided to try us out, so we worked together for a long time, and gaming was OUR first niche. Then we moved on to automation, software development, cybersecurity, and so on until we became a fully specialized tech copywriting agency.

But you may be wondering, how can I find my own niche if I don’t have any experience?

First, it is super important to understand that a niche is not the same as a specialization. A specialization simply refers to the TYPE of copy that you are better at writing. For example, you can specialize in landing pages, email copywriting, website copy, etc.

However, niching is writing for a specific industry and having interest and experience in certain subject matter expert topics such as writing only for eCommerce businesses or healthcare.

It is completely true that if you have a core value in a particular industry for sure you will be more involved in that specific niche.  But whether you choose to niche, specialize, or remain a generalist, the key is finding areas that are related to your interests and strengths and have market demand.

So the answer to the question: to niche, or not to niche?

Our answer >  No rules.

• It’s not mandatory to niche or specialize.

• You can change your focus as your career progresses.

• Reflect on your interests, strengths, and market demand to determine your focus.

• Gain varied experience to understand your preferences.

Whether you niche down, specialize, or embrace diverse challenges, the key is authenticity and a genuine commitment to delivering value. Sometimes, stepping out of your comfort zone can be the gateway to unparalleled growth, expanding your horizons, and enriching your portfolio. After all, in an evolving world leaning towards super-specialization, it’s all about how you adapt, learn, and thrive.

You may feel like if you don’t have a portfolio or past clients, it will be hard to close a new client in a specific niche. But if a project isn’t within your niche or area of specialization, you have a few options:

1. Highlight Similarities: Even if you lack direct experience, draw parallels with niches you’ve tackled to show adaptability.

2. Commit to Excellence: If you’re venturing into unfamiliar territory, convey your dedication to in-depth research and understanding.

3. Know When to Say No: Sometimes, it’s wiser to decline or suggest someone better suited for the niche.

That being said, we hope you just enjoy copywriting as a whole. It is a super interesting career path regardless of your background, and it allows you to monetize your experience not just about things you studied in a university or worked during your career but about hobbies and interests that you may have and want to share with the rest of the world.
